We’re exploring all ways to enjoy bread during National Bread Week and our survey revealed an unlikely accompaniment – ice cream!

In fact, one in five of us say we would eat bread with ice cream and 15% would be disappointed if they were unable to eat bread with ice cream.

We know that bread is one of those foods that is ingrained into the Irish heritage and culture but we hadn’t realised that its extent would include being paired with ice cream. After all, there is bread and butter pudding and the classic summer pudding, so why not pair two of our favourite foods together?

So, in response we’ve created, The Ultimate Ice Cream Sandwich – a brown bread sandwich filled with vanilla ice-cream and raspberries, topped with a simple berry coulis.

The Ultimate Ice Cream Sandwich to serve 2

2 slices of 1cm thick wholemeal bread
75g fresh raspberries or strawberries
2 scoops of vanilla ice cream
2 tbsp of unsweetened raspberry coulis

If that’s not enough, here are 5 more ways to enjoy bread with ice cream:

  1. Ice Cream and Soldiers – scoop of ice cream, served in an egg cup with cinnamon toast ‘soldiers’
  2. Iced Cream Tea – vanilla ice cream served with scones and jam instead of cream
  3. Ice Cream Pizzettes – toasted soda bread wedges topped with caramel or chocolate spread, ice cream and banana, strawberries and blueberries.
  4. Iced Neapolitan Club Sandwich – slice of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream sandwiched between Pan bread slices
  5. Bread and Butter Pudding –  served with ice cream
